Success for Tradesy Sellers

Tradesy is a peer to peer marketplace where buyers can shop directly from sellers. After a seller lists an item, there is no additional guidance or support on how they can improve their listings in order to sell it faster. Because of that, sellers would look for other marketplaces in hopes of getting rid of their item.

GOALS

Motivate and engage sellers to improve their existing listings by adding more photos and information, lowering the price, or fixing potential mistakes. We want to make Tradesy a habit so that they will come back to update their existing listings and list new items.

RESEARCH

We ran a few user interviews and sent out surveys to first time sellers. The thing that came up the most was that sellers are unclear why their items aren't selling and don't know what to do about it.

Feels like sheer luck when I sell something.

Poshmark parties are a way to do marketing...allows you to share your items and for people to discover you. On Tradesy, the only way they can find you is if they come across you or your item when searching.

People have to be looking for that specific item, they wouldn’t have just come across it.

I like that Tradesy helps me manage my listings and makes sure my postings are still active and whether or not I want to lower the price or not.

From our survey, we learned that:

  • We need to show that buyers are actually seeing their item

  • We should recommend general and personalized suggestions to improve their listings

  • We have to make other suggestions - not only to lower the price

  • We must help sellers understand what buyers are actually looking for

  • We could provide a better expectation around sell thru

From other marketplaces, we learned that there is usually one central location like a dashboard that has all the relevant seller information around how they are doing including but not limited to: buyer engagement, potential suggestions, and seller status. Occasionally there was also an activity feed with actions that the user could take.

IDEATION

Based on the research, we knew we had to get more granular around the types of content we could share with sellers. It ranged from displaying their stats for encouragement, suggestions in order to improve their listings, ways to become a more trustworthy closet, and many more. Once we had a list of these suggestions, we started ideating on ways to improve the seller's experience.

In the future, we also thought of having an activity feed where all the things the seller has to do is in one location.
